The Metahistory of David and Aurèle

Requested by an instagram user.

They're only from 2022 but they have a funny contextual origin lol. once again I wont be including every single image of them cuz most of them are on derekdemetripoo.

Edit: I was going to title this a "Brief" metahistory but it's actually almost as long as Paz's so it's not so brief actually.

HONOURABLE MENTION 1 - LIFE: 5th August 2021

This has no relation to David or Aurele per se, but it should be mentioned the similar themes of opposites and yin and yang. Plus none of this is on derekdemetripoo so I might as well archive it. This was after Devil's Adequate era during early office era. Death had a sibling that was supposed to contrast with him. Hence, Life. I mostly wanted to do something with the reflected wound infliction trope. Later on she would become Devil.

I reconceptualized Life to be a bigger contrast, hence the dark grey skin opposed to Death's light gray skin. Also: red vs blue. Still twins by now. More Devil art:

In Figure 6, they're meant to be sitting on something, but nothing's there so it looks weird. Also they were aroace (see: the flag), but now I don't think much on Derek's (Death) sexuality. The girl with the crop-top in Figure 7 was originally an adopt named Kehlani, but I don't have much use for her anymore so I'm trying to resell her on toyhouse.

Figure 9, as bad as it looks, Death is supposed to be in shock. Even though Death has the ability to shapeshift, he probably didn't do it as much or to the same degree that Devil did. As implied by Figure 10 (a rewrite of Devil's origins), Devil has a bit of an identity problem because he wasn't born as his own person, but rather a clone of Death, so he probably shapeshifted pretty liberally to make up for his lack of individuality. Pretty interesting concept, too bad it's not canon anymore. By Figure 9, we had already made it into early TBOD development. This would be the end of Devil. The only relevance he bears now is his shared tail shape with Aurele.

AURELE'S CONCEPTION: 11th September 2022 (hashtag never forget)

Almost exactly 2 years ago I drew this doodle of Aarum with short hair. The idea was to draw him and Derek with swapped hairstyles (Aarum short and Derek long) but I gave up on Derek because he looks ugly w long hair. This was also supposed to be a roleswap au, so that's why Aarum has a weird choker instead of his scar. In the end since I gave up on drawing swapped Derek it just looks like Aarum wearing a choker, which is ooc. lol

AURELE'S CREATION: 19th October 2022

So this was when I decided to actually start cooking up the swap au. You can tell at this time Aurele was more like Aarum instead of a separate identity. The part about emotions doesn't really make sense because if he were what Derek is, he wouldn't have any to begin with, but maybe he chose to turn them on.

The pet panther thing does carry on to modern Aurele. Here is name is "Aurélien" and it was later that I gave him the nickname Aurele for short. Whether or not his name is still Aurélien I don't really care, I'm gonna keep calling him Aurele.

DAVID'S CREATION: 20th October 2022 (my birthday!!!!)

On my 17th birthday, I created David!!!! So he shares his conceptual birthday with me, but his canonical one with Derek. To this day I still love the David I drew with his bio, it's so insanely sexy even though it was the first time I'd properly drawn him. Very proud of that. He has never looked as good I'm afraid.

Now the swap au was complete. Back then I gave David the same surname was Derek because they're the same, duh. I later changed it to Demos to separate them as different characters. Since this was an au there was no kind of canon within it, whatever I happened to draw of it had little relevance or weight. Also, the infamous gay sex angst:

I still chuckle about how serious I was when I posted this. Needless to say it's not canon at all. It honestly reads better as David x Aarum than David and Aurele.

AURELE REBRAND: 10th December 2022

Now came the era of true Aurele. He was no longer an Aarum copy but his own, chaotic person. Ultimately this is a way more interesting take on the swap au because if you had that much power you'd turn out different too. Also taking into account the sheer lack of social interaction that comes with it, making him more dense than Aarum is.

From time to time I would draw Derek and Aurele together as a funny hypothetical situation. It was never canon.

It was around this time that I got hyperfixated on The Muppets so I made it one of David's interests. Weirdly enough, he had the kermit tie when I first drew him (before my Muppets fixation), so that interest was already there, but it was an arbitrary decision. I only amplified it after it became a hyperfixation. By the way, I have his tie irl. I don't have that exact watch, but a close one. I hid it somewhere in my room because the ticking was driving me insane, I think it's still somewhere there.

"essentially this theory suggests dereks universe was actually created by aurele destroying his (inspired by an existing take on the big bang) bc he wanted to give david all his power to see what he could do w it. which was basically a reset but w david (now derek) in power and having forgotten everything. aurele was still sprinkled around in the new universe, thats what aarum is. he is as much aurele as derek is david. which is to say, sort of, in essence!. so yeas. i guess u could say. love endures 😊❤️! i also like this theory bc it implies derek isnt alone in that aurele was like him before the restart. but they cant ever meet in their true /essences/. only with one being sort of a reincarnation of themself this isnt to say both universes are exactly the same, bc theyre not. for one, derek's universe is actually a multiverse. bc derek created the multiverse (youll see why in the book), whereas aureles was just one this is not canon lol im just having fun, call it dubiously canon...."

That's about it. It basically still holds up to modern development. Now there was some weight to this au, in that it might not even be an au! it might be the u! but before the u even existed. Fun!

Felt it was somewhat relevant to include this. A bit more about David's origins however his birth year here is 1935 instead of 1937, so he would've been 34 when he died. Maybe it was a mistake, or maybe it was a lore change. Not sure. I think I like 32 better.

I had already been entertaining the idea of David being interested in animation (like me~~~~) and I eventually made it canon (Figure 23). From that interest, he'd also know how to draw and maybe even animate (Figure 24), his art style was inspired by Hanna-Barbera cartoons & The Beatles cartoon, both of which were around when he was alive.

From Figure 24, I began to think of another plot point in David's afterlife, from the patreon:

"if u didnt catch the august request dump, davids fake imaginary girlfriend is charlotte and i think after he died aurele would offer to make her real but it wouldnt work out bc of the ethical concerns."

Everything after December 2023 is pretty streamline, so there's no need to really talk about those individually. There is actually a bit of plot in David & Aurele's life, but I never wrote it or drew it or even talked about it. I just thunk it. I will probably get into that in the future. Now I'm really sleepy after writing all this.

in my last post, i spoke abt ‘slightly’ altering his design- basically i just decked his ass out with sierpinski triangles, because i can.

some of the redesigns, going into more depth:

his (button) eyes, in which is inspired by a sierpinski triangle in spherical geometry, projected stereographically.

his lace and symbols (?) on his hood and back. tbh the lace was more because i couldnt see shit on my ref so i just redesigned it altogether. the symbol on his hood simply js has a few extra add-ons, in which being a couple more squiggles and before mentioned triangles

im an artist with a main focus in character design and concept art, though i do illustrations too. i love my ocs so thats what i draw most of the time. id advise against following me for fandom stuff other than lotf but i do reblog some animanga things and other media i like from time to time. i use this blog as a catchall for my art, yapping, and reblogs, so beware.

if youre coming from the lotf fandom, hi. so heres the deal. i used to draw the lotf characters, but eventually my designs and hcs for them became so complex and removed from the novel that i decided to make them ocs. theyre called the island kids. you can look at their refs and read about them by clicking that link. i long for them to eventually be their own characters apart from lotf, but i understand that they still look and act similarly to the lotf characters, and seeing as they literally evolved from them, they can pretty much be treated as the same thing. thats why im here. i still engage with the fandom normally, but when i draw the "lotf characters" im really drawing the island kids. apologies if thats highly confusing, dont worry. im still confused myself.

if youre here for oc content, hi. i have way too many projects to possibly keep track of so id suggest to not even try. if youre interested in any particular project feel free to ask and i will spill the beans all over your counter. i dont really have a hierarchy of projects as my focus switches constantly but in general the island kids and catwog are on top. im also a big fan of making gijinkas so youll probably see a lot of those from me too. i aspire to be a character designer / concept artist one day and making ocs have always kind of been an outlet for me to hone that skill. i treat them like my babies. i hope you will like them as much as i do.

things i use in my art:

use references. i know this is probably obvious but IT HELPS !! feel free to use as many references as you need and don't be afraid to open up a sketchbook to, well—sketch out your ideas and play around with composition !

train your eye to see larger shapes instead of relying too heavily on your brains judgement. some people turn their paper + ref upsidedown so they get the shape right instead of their idea of what it looks like.

“perfect practice.” something my music teacher told me back when i was younger—it doesn't matter how much you practice if you don't try to get better.

experiment with composition. if you're not sure how things are gonna look, take a page out of your sketchbook (or make a new canvas if you're on digital) and doodle a rough sketch of the shapes youre thinking of

take breaks. sometimes you've been working on a piece for too long n it looks PERFECT, but when you look back you notice all the mistakes. or sometimes its the opposite !! sometimes it looks so so ugly but then you take a break and suddenly you can't believe you even drew that. also sometimes your hand will hurt but u wont notice until u stop drawing. drink water, go to the restroom, eat, nap; all of these are good ways to take breaks without the whole "…but i could be working" mindset

save your wrists by using more of your elbow and shoulder instead of your wrists. also don't forget to stretch (i've got funky joints…learned not to rely too much on finger joints n wrists the hard way ouch)

don't draw too much in the dark. i know the night is tempting but turn on a lamp. also drink water, eat, take care of yourself please. (refer to #5)

draw stuff you like. when you like something and you're drawing it, it's like "WOAH i get to draw [xyz] !!!" and you have more fun with it. oH but don't pressure yourself to be perfect !! i say perfect practice but perfection is just the image you had in your head

don't be afraid to experiment !! sometimes u gotta screw it all n just have fun. use funky colors !! go insane with shading !! eventually, you'll just pick out the stuff you like from your experiments and develop a really cool n unique style <3

bored ?? just have fun n doodle stuff. break all the rules. kill someone with your art. art the hell out of a random friend (ask beforehand). draw your pencil a thousand times over. make a really detailed envelope. have fun !! art is supposed to be fun !!

this is mostly for me but i intend to make a bunch of sketches to dump and then work through them all till they're completed (and a few will probably die but regardless). only posting cuz writing things down helps reinforce my memory and also i can refer back when i do inevitably make that sketch dump and then realize i missed like half my want to draw list

need to do two reference type things. not real ones i aint got time for that boo . want to make a specific slugpup into a more formal oc bc she basically is atp and then also draw hc stuff for srs and MAYBE pull some refs off the internet to learn how to draw clothing for once in the process. it'd be a good practice

maybe another leviathan meme that'd be funnier, i don't remember the context of the other one so it stopped being funny to me but i remembered the meme with the shark swimming in the middle of the woods and i think that'd be a funny one to do with a leviathan

and then once i make the slugpup oc's ref / have an idea of her (i honestly might do this one later) i might doodle her with osa while hes rotting bc oc lore. her point is very conceptual atm though i might not do anything with her there honestly. another thing i might do later once i decide is remake my lock screen but i can't decide if i want to do my rw ocs or dma stuff for that, i think im gonna do dma stuff for that - will end up waiting a bit longer if i do choose that one since i dont actually know everyone's characters for it yet

+ i still have some verm and iw stuff i wanted to draw as perspective / background practice / general doodling . there was 3 i wanted to make though 1 is less practice and i may not complete the other 2 when i get to it. that's been sitting for ages now i have to,,,....

Most, if not all, of her nicknames consist of just, bugs. Moth. Firefly. Bee. Wasp and Hornet are used a lot by the other Heroes (in an endearing way ofc). Beetle is by far everyones (especially Bug's) #1 fav tho (they secretly named her journal "Beetle" but they wont ever admit it)

On the topic of nicknames, she does NOT like being called "Buggy" by ANYONE. They WILL get violent

They tend to the other Heroes' rambles about their interests a lot and thats how they got into most of their own (ae tinkers with a bit of technology thanks to Gold, in fact. Shut up I'm inserting my headcanons here /silly/lh)

She eats uncooked spaghetti noodles and LOVES cheese

They and Gold do occasionally vibe together (it was extremely awkward every time at first)

Before Hexalace became aer new caretaker ae was bouncing back and forth between staying with the other caretakers (Pentellow and Iris & Cube mostly, VERY rarely Pyrare, only in extreme emergencies because they all learned that Bug did NOT manage very well being in a room with Pyrare (and/or Gold for that matter, as this was VERY pre-apology)

She's went to a funeral once and made a really bad joke that 'why is everyone wearing grayscale, I thought that was my thing' (they were immediately removed from said funeral, ae didn't really understand why until way later)

She spells Hexalace's name as 'Hezalace' and REFUSES to spell it any other way, even if someone tries teaching them that it's not a 'Z' it's an 'X'. Hexalace doesn't mind though she knows ae'll grow out of that one

For some reason, she and Gold ‘share a braincell’ (not literally) very often. Sometimes they'll have very similar reactions as each other to certain things, if not the exact same reaction.

She's a VERY skilled pickpocketer- if you need something Yoinked, that is your girl. They've stolen so many things from those she trusts to tease them a bit (ae has yet to understand that she has to give them back before ae leaves, sadly) that everyone now has a habit of checking their pockets even after just walking past Bug

This is due to a very specific headcanon that Herospeak (what i and The Besties™ call that little squeaky ass language that the Heroes do) is spoken in a VERY specific high pitch of voice and its natural to Heroes. (Non-Heroes CAN learn but it is it EXTREMELY hard and its also very hard to understand without the pitch that only Heroes can reach with their voice). Anyways- due to her connection just. Never Being There at first for a while, Bug did not know how to speak Herospeak at first. She also cant reach that pitch even with her connection being restored- so they have a VERY heavy accent when speaking in Herospeak causing her to need to repeat herself a lot

Back when ae was unmatured ae once pissed off Gold so bad he tried to put aer in the microwave

i tried for so long to make my dca models look "mechanically functional" then realized i was making it more of a chore than enjoying my art. so now i just try to draw them without being like "hey those joints wouldnt mechanically and realistically work if they were transferred to reality"

its a cycle because i need to save the more complex designs for refs that i wont draw very often, and have more simple design for just doodles and illustrative work thats not being some master piece :3

unless making things realistically possible is fun for you, and youre not an architech or some designer for real life things, dont fret over this stuff, just have fun and draw goofy characters :3

to clearify! no dislike towards making character look realistic, as i mentioned, i like to do it too, but doing it constantly was just not very helpful to me enjoying my art :3

A tutorial you say? Alright. Time to unleash my Orb secrets. My little grumpus drawing recipe if you will. I’ve never done a tutorial before so sorry if this ends up being a bumpy ride.

So, I have a weird way of drawing grumpuses kinda, I don’t use guidelines or anything I kinda just go. I probably wouldn’t recommend doing it exactly like I do especially if you’re trying to learn. Use guidelines totally I would say.

the biggest tip I can give for drawing grumps or anything really is use references! Get a large reference pool of grumpus pictures together. what I did first drawing the grumps was I got a blank page and I just doodled stuff and messed around with how grumps looks and fit their traits into how my style works. I think that’s truly the best way to learn to draw grumps, or like anything.

(also, to all my fellow iPad users out there I totally recommend the app VizRef. It’s an app where you can make giant references boards and It’s perfect for drawing on the iPad. It’s four dollars but totally worth it, if you’re an iPad user it’s a must have, I say. Get it you wont regret your decision.)

If you’re learning to draw grumpuses for yourself I would actually try not to apply everything in this tutorial in your own art, because a lot of this is just applies to how I personally draw grumps. unless you are trying to copy my style specifically, it’d recommend taking inspiration, if you’re trying to have your own way of drawing the funny muppet people

Anyway

90% of the time I draw grumpuses heads at a 3/4 view. This allows me to just draw in their eyes to start like so. For other head positions I draw a circle to start.

Then I start drawing the face. I’ll start with the nose that usually located under both eyes slightly. For character with an overbite I start the mouth next to the eye facing away from me and wrap it around. The rest of the characters will usually have a mouth that’s kinda like a subtle :3 face. That’s the best way I can describe it lmao

This is hardest part for me at least, for the heads I’ll draw the back of the neck and then the other side of the face, then I’ll connect them in a dome shape to make the head. It’s takes me like 20 times to draw the top of the head until it looks right, this part is very tedious. (The worst part is I’ll probably just erase it later because the characters probably wearing a hat or something else)

Boleslaw and Wiggle are kinda bad examples of this but- the shoulders for me will usually just start right after the neck. With the exception of Wambus and Wiggle and Floofty sometimes, I draw the arms before I draw the chest. I feel like it’s easier for me to plan out the pose that way cause I don’t use guidelines.

I usually just give grumps basic human anatomy, so arms end when they reach the thighs, make em seven heads tall, yada yada

Also nothin much to say about accessories, since those vary for each character.

This is the hardest part to explain. I draw the hands before I draw the arms since It’s easier to have the arm in the position I want it to be in. For grumpus paws I only give them four fingers and they’re usually little fat sausages. Nothing I can really say other than look at hands/paws. If it helps the palm isn’t a square, think of it more like a pentagon. And there’s usually a curve under the thumb and the pinky like you can see in the drawing below, don’t forget those. That was a tip I got and that’s probably helped me the most.

Legs are also kinda hard to explain. But there’s a shape diagram of how I shape the legs. Mess around with those kinda shapes. Also I take inspiration from animal legs, specially mammals like canines and big cats for the legs and feet. So I would recommend looking at those too.

Also I forgot to show it here but I try to raise the heels when I draw the feet sometimes. You can see it when I drew Snorpy’s feet in that one drawing of Snorpy and Gramble hanging out I drew. Most of the time they’re flat though.

I think that’s everything. My style is kinda hard to explain but I hoped this helped! I don’t know if I’m the best art mentor, so If you have any questions feel free to ask and I’ll do my best to answer them
